Teaching Excellence Awards

The Academic Affairs Committee of USG is pleased to announce the 2008 Teaching Excellence Awards. The committee is currently seeking nominations from students for the awards.

This year there are five award categories. To submit a nomination, please click on the category title. Nominations will be open until Sunday, March 2, 2008.

Extra Mile Outside the Classroom
The Extra Mile Outside the Classroom Award is granted to a professor who is extensively dedicated to the learning of his or her students. The recipient of this award exhibits concerned efforts that go above and beyond the usual requirements of teaching; this could include attending Supplemental Instruction sessions to aid in answering students’ questions, making Office Hours both helpful and inviting, or providing exceptional resources in addition to coursework that amply supplement learning.

Outstanding SAGES Activity
The Outstanding SAGES Activity Award is given to an instructor of a freshman-only First Seminar which meets the Seminar Approach to General Education and Scholarship program’s guidelines. The criteria for the award focus on one or more 4th Hour Activities that the class participates in; the activity(ies) must be original, informative, and engaging, and must wholly and effectively fulfill the expectations of the SAGES 4th Hour curricula. The experience which the students brought away from the program should have been memorable and stimulating, and should have lent them a better understanding of what the Cleveland area has to offer.

Best Educational Program Organized by a Campus Office
The Best Educational Program Organized by a Campus Office Award can be awarded to any campus office which sponsors a presentation, activity, or event of significant value to the Case community, especially students. This award not only pertains to programs of direct educational value, but also those contributing to student life at Case or presenting an opportunity to students that otherwise would not be available.

Inspiring Professor
The Inspiring Professor Award bases its criteria on the desire of the instructor to foster learning in his or her classroom. Winners must exhibit incomparable enthusiasm or interest in the topics discussed in class. The professor must make learning not a painstaking process, but something that students are excited and eager for. After taking the class of a professor who meets the expectations of this award, students should leave with an amplified craving for knowledge in the subject matter taught.

Engaging Lectures
The Engaging Lectures Award goes to an instructor who takes an innovative approach to teaching his or her subject matter. Even students who are simply required, but not eager, to take the course look forward to attending class because of the out-of-the-ordinary or energizing methods the professor implements in order to convey the material. A professor who includes many students in his or her lectures and teaches by doing something more than reading off a power point or writing notes on a blackboard will be the winner of this award.
