Election Commission

Each USG election is overseen by an Election Commission. This Commission must have at least five members, at least two of which must be USG members.  In election with Class Officers, the commission also include at least on current Class Officer.  The Election Commission is appointed by USG and helps publicize elections, coordinates canidate recruitment, enforce election rules, and oversees the operations of the elections.

Commission Decisions

3/21/08 - Allowed letter of intent for Parliamentarian from Gabriel Suprise.  Letter submitted after deadline, but within acceptable timeframe. 5 yes, 0 no.

3/21/08 - Allowed Austin Bennet to run for Vice President of Information Technology, pending approval of USG constitutional amendment removing requirement of one semester prior service in USG. 5 yes, 0 no.

3/21/08 - Allowed a USG Public Relations Committee event to promote voting on Thursday, March 28.  No candidates may participate. 5 yes, 0 no.

3/21/08 - Changed Charu Waghulde letter of intent to Class of 2011 Secretary.  Election Commissioner.

3/21/08 - Added letter of intent for Class of 2010 President from Jonathan Lopatin.  Submitted ontime, but problems due to technical difficulties. Election Commissioner.

3/22/08 - Ruled on the use of picket signs in the ground as campaign tool.  2 yes, 3 no.

3/22/08 - Issued warning to David Bernholt, candidate for Class of 2009 Vice President, for sending a mass email. 5 yes, 0 no.

3/22/08 - Issued warning to David Gordon, candidate for Class of 2009 Vice President, for mass email sent by a supporter. 5 yes, 0 no.

3/23/08 - Investigated campaign violation on Spirit Wall.  Determined no candidate at fault. 5 yes, 0 no.

3/24/08 - Considering neither the student body nor the election commission were informed by the Class Officers of the Class Officer bylaw requirement that the Senior Class President have previously served as a Class Officer for at least one semester until Sundary evening and that one candidate did not meet that requirement;
·          The Class Officer Collective should issue a formal public apology to Mari Elisse Cortez and the student body to be published in the Observer for not publicizing their bylaws and candidate requirements
·          Ms. Cortez should continue to be allowed to run for the Class of 2009 President position, pending the approval of the Class Officer Collective
·          If the Class Officer Collective decides to not allow her candidacy, the election commission would remove all four of the Class of 2009  officer positions from the ballot in Thursday’s election
·    If a special election is required, all members of the Class of 2009 would be eligible to resubmit letters of intent for the positions, under the position requirements of the Class Officers
The Class Officers voted 8-2 to disqualify Ms. Cortez.  All 2009 Class Officer Candidates will be removed from the ballot and a special election will be held in the upcoming weeks to fill those positions.

3/25/08 - Issue two warnings to candidates for minor posting violations.  Election Commissioner.

3/26/08 - Allow flyers placed underneath Village apartment doors, even though in technical violation of Housing rules. 5 yes, 0 no.
